Save Plymouth Citybus Stop the Tory Sell-Off Plymouth Citybus is a success story. One of a dwindling number of publicly owned bus companies, it is 49% owned by Plymouth City Council - this means that even though it makes a profit, there is still a large element of public service in the way it is run. 'Unprofitable' routes, that serve our local communities are maintained, timetables still provide regular services, pensioners' bus passes are still free and the city council sponsors the reduced rate Green Travel scheme. Also under threat will be the school bus service, and many of the engineers jobs, if external customers (like Plymouth City Council) withdraw from using them. Now the Tory council wants to sell off the rest - already the vultures are circling, with First Devon & Taxifast boss John Preece expressing an interest. You can download the petition and their first leaflet, to use in your branch and at work, from the Download section on the left side of this page. Unite members and their supporters demonstrated in the city centre on Saturday 20th June, recieving huge support from the public, with a further 2000 signatures collected!
The next Save Plymouth Citybus demonstration is to take place on Monday 6th July outside of the council offices. The plan is for people to meet outside of the Civic Centre at 12.30hrs. The demonstration will then take place shortly afterwards and is timed to coincide with the council meeting planned for 14.00 hrs. Everyone is most welcome to join us Theit next demonstration will be outside the Civic Centre. We'll keep you update on further campaign events.
